Cheapest Twilio Alternative 2026: SMS API Pricing Compared

Bird is the cheapest of four US SMS APIs compared for 50,000 one-time codes a month, ahead of Telnyx, Plivo and Twilio. Prices checked October 10, 2026.

For 50,000 US one-time codes a month, Bird has the lowest list rate of the four SMS APIs ranked here: $175.50 a month at $0.0035 per segment with one number, before carrier fees. Twilio, the default comparison point, costs $416.15 for the same volume. Telnyx comes second at $201.00 and adds no carrier fee on carriers outside its named list. Every price is in USD, checked on each vendor's own pricing page on October 10, 2026.

Vonage, Sinch, AWS SNS, Infobip and Bandwidth are left out. The reasons are in the section "Who is left out, and why", and none of their prices appear in the tables.

Toolradar data: the Twilio alternatives list on Toolradar names 8 tools: 5 direct alternatives and 3 in the same category, updated October 2026. Each vendor in the table also has its own tool page on Toolradar: Twilio, Plivo, Telnyx and Bird.

Cost comparison at 50,000 one-time codes

Every row uses the same scenario: 50,000 one-segment messages and one sending number a month, at list rate, with no volume discount.

Tool Entry price per segment Monthly cost Monthly cost with AT&T fee Free plan Hidden costs
Bird $0.0035 $175.50 $350.50 No SMS allowance listed Carrier fees not listed by carrier; setup and registration fees can apply
Telnyx $0.004 $201.00 $376.00 No SMS allowance; $0 platform fee Carrier fees on a named list only; $1.00 per number
Plivo $0.0077 $385.50 $560.50 Trial credits, amount not stated Carrier fee on every route; $0.50 per long code
Twilio $0.0083 $416.15 $591.15 Free start, no card needed; no SMS allowance listed $1.15 per leased number; $0.001 per failed message

"Monthly cost" includes one number. The AT&T column adds the AT&T carrier fee explained below to each vendor's rate. Bird publishes no per-carrier fee table, so its AT&T figure comes from the US example on its own pricing page, which prices 10,000 segments with AT&T fees included at $70, or $0.007 each.

The scenario, and why it is one segment

The buyer is a team sending sign-in codes, password resets or order confirmations, each short enough to travel as a single segment. Twilio and Bird bill per segment, Telnyx bills per message part and Plivo bills per SMS. One segment per message keeps all four on the same footing, and a message that needs two segments is billed twice.

At this volume the number rental is under 1% of every bill, so the per-message rate decides the order. No volume discount is applied. Telnyx's volume tiers start at 100 million message parts a month, far above this scenario. This comparison does not model the volume tiers at Bird or Twilio, so the ranking is a verdict for 50,000 messages, not for a program many times larger.

The arithmetic, shown once

Twilio: $0.0083 per segment x 50,000 segments = $415.00, plus $1.15 for one leased long code = $416.15 a month. Bird: $0.0035 x 50,000 = $175.00, plus $0.50 for one US local number = $175.50. The gap is $240.65 a month, 58% less than Twilio's bill, or $2,887.80 a year.

Carrier fees: the part the headline rate leaves out

Carrier fees are charged per segment on top of the vendor's rate, and they depend on who receives the message. AT&T charges $0.0035 on Twilio, Plivo and Telnyx alike. T-Mobile charges $0.0045 on all three. Verizon is $0.005 on Twilio and Plivo and $0.0045 on Telnyx, while U.S. Cellular is $0.005 on Twilio and Telnyx. Plivo groups U.S. Cellular with other carriers at $0.005, and Twilio charges $0.0042 on all other carriers.

Telnyx is the exception. It charges nothing on carriers outside its named list, so on that traffic its $0.004 rate is the whole cost. That is the one route where a vendor with a higher list rate can still come out cheaper for the same message.

Telnyx's own US example also prices carrier pass-through at a blended $0.0038 per part. At 50,000 messages that adds $190.00, for a total of $391.00 with the number. Bird's rate card shows carrier fees separately and does not list them by carrier, so its total is confirmed only for AT&T traffic.

Where the ranking flips

Three things change the order at this volume.

Bird against Telnyx turns on the carrier. Bird's list rate is $0.0005 below Telnyx's, so on traffic where Telnyx charges no carrier fee, any Bird carrier fee above $0.0005 per segment makes Telnyx cheaper for that recipient. Bird's fees by carrier are not on its pricing page, so ask Bird for its per-carrier fees before routing traffic on that basis. On AT&T traffic Bird still wins, at $0.007 against Telnyx's $0.0075 per segment.

Twilio against Plivo is nearly a tie. Plivo's list rate is $0.0006 lower, which is about $30 a month at 50,000 messages. On traffic to carriers outside AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and U.S. Cellular, though, Plivo charges $0.005 and Twilio charges $0.0042. That puts Twilio at $626.15 a month and Plivo at $635.50 on that traffic, so the order reverses.

Volume is the third trigger. Telnyx's volume tiers start at 100 million message parts a month, and this comparison leaves out Bird's and Twilio's. Read the order as a verdict for this scenario only.

Which one to pick at this volume

Pick Bird when the list rate decides it and its carrier fees check out on your own recipients. It has the lowest base rate in the table, and at AT&T traffic it still totals less than Telnyx. The risk is that its pricing page does not list carrier fees by carrier, so you cannot see its cost on every route before you sign.

Pick Telnyx when a large share of your traffic goes to carriers outside its named list. On that traffic it charges only the $0.004 list rate, and it publishes a per-carrier table, so you can check the rest of its costs before committing.

Pick Plivo if your main goal is to move off Twilio for a modest saving. It is the closest match to Twilio's price, at about $30 a month less on list rate, and it comes out cheaper than Twilio on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon traffic. Twilio keeps the edge on traffic to carriers outside those names, so check your recipient mix first.

Twilio's hidden lines

Twilio's headline rate is the number people quote, but other lines sit on its invoice. Its leased long code costs $1.15 a month, or $0.50 if you bring your own number. Each message that ends in a Failed status adds a $0.001 processing fee. US application-to-person texts also need 10DLC registration, and Twilio says those registrations carry onboarding fees without giving the amount on its rate card.

Bird says setup and registration fees can apply, and none of the four totals in the table includes a registration charge. Budget for those fees with whichever vendor you pick, and ask each vendor for the exact amount before you compare totals.

Who is left out, and why

Five vendors are not in the table, and none of their prices appear on this page.

  • Vonage: this page has no verified US SMS rate to compare.
  • Sinch: its public SMS rate card lists per-message prices without naming a country, so they cannot be attributed to the US.
  • AWS SNS: its pricing page lists 10DLC fees, $4 one-time per company and $1 a month per 10DLC number, while its per-message US rate sits in a separate per-country table on the AWS SNS SMS pricing page.
  • Infobip: its SMS rates sit behind a per-country estimator, and its pricing page shows no US figure.

Bandwidth is the fifth name left out, because this page ranks only vendors whose US rate it verified on their own pricing page.

How we checked these prices

Devshot checked each vendor's own pricing page on October 10, 2026: Twilio, Plivo, Telnyx and Bird. Prices are list rates in USD, per segment or message part, and none is a quote. Totals are computed for 50,000 one-segment messages and one number, with carrier fees shown separately because they depend on the recipient. Devshot's editorial rules are on the about page.

FAQ

What is the cheapest SMS API in 2026?

Among the four SMS APIs ranked here, Bird has the lowest list rate. At 50,000 US one-time codes a month, it costs $175.50 with one number, before carrier fees. Telnyx comes second at $201.00. Both prices were checked on October 10, 2026.

How much does Twilio cost per SMS in the US?

Twilio's US long-code rate is $0.0083 per outbound segment, plus a carrier fee that depends on the recipient's carrier. A leased long code adds $1.15 a month. At 50,000 messages, the list-rate total is $416.15 a month, checked on October 10, 2026.

Is there a free SMS API?

None of the four rate cards lists a free, ongoing SMS allowance. Plivo gives new accounts trial credits, and Twilio offers a free start with no card required, but neither page states the amount. Bird and Telnyx list no SMS allowance, so budget for every message from the first one.

What is a cheaper alternative to Twilio for US texts?

Bird and Telnyx both list US SMS rates below Twilio's, and Plivo is the closest, about $30 a month less at 50,000 messages. Bird's total depends on carrier fees it does not publish by carrier, so ask Bird for those fees before you switch.

Why does the carrier fee change the ranking?

Carrier fees are charged per segment on top of the vendor's rate, based on who receives the message, so they change the total for the same traffic. Each $0.001 per segment adds $50 a month at 50,000 messages. Telnyx charges nothing on carriers outside its named list, which can make it cheaper than a vendor with a lower base rate on that traffic.

Does Plivo cost less than Twilio?

On list rate, yes: $0.0077 per segment against Twilio's $0.0083, about $30 a month less at 50,000 messages. The order can reverse on traffic to carriers outside AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and U.S. Cellular, where Twilio's fee is lower.
