The Best Transactional Email APIs in 2026

Seven transactional email APIs compared on free tiers, the monthly bill at 50,000 emails and the cost of a dedicated IP.

TL;DR

For 50,000 transactional emails a month, Amazon SES is the cheapest at about $5 on list rates, but it means running an AWS account and your own bounce handling. Among managed services that publish a 50,000-email price, SendGrid Essentials is lowest at $19.95 a month, Resend Pro and Mailtrap Basic tie at $20 a month, and Mailgun's Foundation plan costs $35.

For free sending, Mailtrap has the largest stated monthly allowance, 4,000 emails with a 150-a-day cap, and Brevo has the highest daily cap at 300 a day after account approval. SendGrid's current pricing page lists a 60-day trial and no permanent free plan, so budget it as a paid service from the start.

A transactional email API sends the message your app fires on its own: a signup confirmation, a password reset, an invoice.

Every service on this list bills that sending, but the free tiers, daily caps and dedicated IP add-ons differ enough that the same 50,000 emails can cost from the cheapest option here to $87 a month, depending on the vendor and the plan you land on.

Toolradar data: the transactional email guide on Toolradar evaluated 13 transactional email tools, updated October 2026, and 12 of the 13 have a free plan.

For the wider category, open Amazon SES, Resend, Mailtrap, Mailgun, Postmark, Brevo and SendGrid there, and use the prices below for the bill.

How we ranked: seven APIs, each priced on the vendor's own pricing page on 10 October 2026.

The order follows the monthly list cost at 50,000 emails, and ties go to the larger free allowance. A vendor whose page does not show a 50,000-email price sits last, and we do not estimate it. Where a plan shows only a base quota and a per-1,000 overage, we compute the 50,000-email figure from those published rates and say so.

What it is

A transactional email API is a send endpoint your code calls once per event. The price follows the volume you send, not the size of your subscriber list, and that is what separates it from a marketing platform.

Resend's marketing plans, for example, are priced by contact on a separate list, so a newsletter's bill follows the subscriber count rather than the send count.

The category splits into two billing shapes.

Per-message services such as Amazon SES charge a flat rate per 1,000 emails with no monthly plan. Plan-based services sell a monthly bundle of emails and charge overage above it.

A bundle looks cheap until the month runs past it, which is why every option here is priced at the same volume.

A team building on a serverless platform or a backend-as-a-service such as Supabase sees this bill grow with signups, because each signup triggers a send.

Why it matters

At 50,000 emails a month, the spread is wide. Amazon SES is the lowest at list rates, SendGrid Essentials comes next at $19.95, Mailtrap Basic and Resend Pro follow at the same $20, Mailgun's Foundation plan follows, and Postmark costs the most of the plans with a 50,000 figure once overage is added.

The gap is the monthly sending bill, not the feature list.

Free tiers differ in shape too. Mailtrap's 4,000 emails a month is the largest stated monthly allowance here, while Brevo's 300 a day is the highest daily cap. The daily cap matters when a launch or a burst of password resets sends most of a month in one afternoon.

The cloud free tiers comparison covers the compute side of the same launch budget.

Dedicated IPs add a second line. Resend's add-on is $30 a month, Mailgun lists $59 per IP, Postmark starts at $50 per IP, and SES's is the lowest of the four.

Resend reserves its add-on for senders above 3,000 emails a day on the Scale plan, so most small senders never see that price on the way in.

Key features to look for

The billing unitEssential
Amazon SES bills each message, while the other services sell a monthly bundle. Price the bundle at your real monthly volume, because the overage rates that are published run from $0.90 to $1.80 per 1,000 emails.
The daily cap on free sendingEssential
Resend and Mailgun cap free sending at 100 a day, Mailtrap at 150 and Brevo at 300 once the account is approved. SendGrid's trial allows 100 a day for 60 days. A cap of 100 a day can stop a launch even when the monthly total looks small.
Trial versus permanent free planEssential
SendGrid's current pricing page lists a 60-day trial and no permanent free plan. Postmark's free plan is 100 emails a month. Mailgun's Foundation plan carries a 30-day trial before its $35 price starts.
Dedicated IP
A per-IP add-on, priced from $24.95 a month on SES to $59 on Mailgun. Resend's $30 add-on is reserved for senders above 3,000 emails a day on Scale, and SendGrid includes one IP on its Pro plan.
Annual billing
Brevo's yearly price on Starter is about 10% below its monthly price. Resend's self-serve plans are billed monthly only, and Postmark lists no annual plans on its pricing page.

Pricing

Start with the flat per-message rate, because it converts cleanly to a monthly bill. Amazon SES charges $0.10 per 1,000 emails, so 50,000 sends cost the least of any option here before attachment data.

Plan-based services bill a monthly base, and the cost at 50,000 depends on where the plan ends.

Resend Pro and Mailtrap Basic both include 50,000 emails at the same monthly price, and Mailgun Foundation covers that volume after a 30-day trial.

Postmark plans include 10,000 emails, so 50,000 comes to $66 to $87 once overage is added, computed from its published per-1,000 rates.

Brevo shows no 50,000-email price, so we leave that figure out rather than estimate it.

SendGrid's volume selector does show one: $19.95 a month for 50,000 emails. Brevo's entry plan starts at $9 a month for Starter, and that entry price is the comparison we can make for Brevo.

Mistakes to avoid
×Comparing a free plan with a paid entry price as if they gave the same allowance. SendGrid's trial ends after 60 days, and Brevo's 300 a day starts only once the account is approved.
×Pricing Postmark at its base price for a 50,000-email month. The base covers 10,000 emails, so overage takes the bill to $66 or more.
×Assuming a dedicated IP comes free. Resend charges for one on Scale, Mailgun lists $59 per IP, and SES charges for one too, so the IP adds to the bill.
Expert tips
→Price the peak day as well as the month. Resend's free tier allows 100 emails a day and Mailtrap's 150, so a launch-day burst can hit the cap while the monthly total stays low. Mailtrap's Basic plan lists unlimited daily sends, and Resend Pro lists no daily limit. For alerts on a send spike, see the <a href="/reviews/best-monitoring-tools">monitoring tools guide</a>.
→Wire up bounce handling before trusting SES's low price. SES reports bounces and complaints through AWS notifications that your code has to receive and act on, so the lowest bill also carries the most setup work. The <a href="/reviews/best-error-tracking-tools">error tracking tools guide</a> covers the alerting side, and the <a href="/reviews/best-api-testing-tools">API testing tools guide</a> covers testing the send path before launch.
→Check the first invoice, not the headline. Mailgun's Foundation plan starts after a 30-day trial, Brevo's yearly price on Starter is about 10% below monthly, and Postmark's base covers only 10,000 emails, so compare each vendor at 50,000 emails.

The bottom line

Default to Resend Pro or Mailtrap Basic when you want a managed service at the same flat monthly price for 50,000 emails.

Pick Amazon SES when the lowest bill matters more than the setup, and your team can run bounce handling on its own.

Choose Mailgun if its 30-day trial on Foundation fits your launch timing. Choose Postmark only if your sending stays close to 10,000 emails a month, where its base price is the real cost.
