WorkOS Review
What AuthKit and each SSO connection really cost, where the per-connection ladder bites, and how WorkOS compares with Clerk, Auth0, Stytch and Descope.
Short answer: WorkOS is worth it for a B2B product whose enterprise customers are few and large, because AuthKit is free for the first 1 million monthly active users and you pay only per SSO or directory connection. Each connection costs $125 a month for the first 15, so ten enterprise customers on SSO cost $1,250 a month with no user fees at all. The catch is that the connection fee is the whole bill: a product with many small customers who each want SSO pays far more than on Clerk, where extra connections are $75 each. Stytch is the strongest alternative when five connections are enough, since its free tier includes them.
Key factsBest for: B2B SaaS with few, large enterprise customers that need…
- Free user management up to 1 million monthly active users, with the entire bill sitting on per-connection fees for SSO and directory sync.
- AuthKit: Free for the first 1 million monthly active users
- Enterprise SSO: Billed per connection, with the rate stepping down at 16, 31 and 51 connections
- At 10,000 users and 10 SSO customers: $1,250 a month, all of it connection fees
- Above 1 million users: $2,500 a month for each additional million
Pros
- AuthKit is free for the first 1 million monthly active users, so login costs nothing until a product is large
- SSO works with any SAML or OIDC identity provider, and connection pricing steps down at 16, 31 and 51 connections
- Directory Sync, Audit Logs with SIEM streaming and Radar fraud checks come from the same vendor and the same integration
Cons
- Every SSO connection costs the same whether the customer has 20 users or 20,000, which punishes products with many small enterprise accounts
- A customer who wants SSO and SCIM is two connections, so ten such customers are 20 billable lines
- Audit log streaming is priced per SIEM connection on top of SSO, so a security-conscious customer adds a third line

WorkOS sells the part of authentication that lands when a startup signs its first enterprise customer: SAML or OIDC single sign-on, SCIM directory sync and audit logs, delivered through one API. Its pricing is unusual, because the user count is free until 1 million and the money sits entirely in the per-connection line. Toolradar data: of the 103 identity and access tools we evaluated for the identity and access ranking, updated 16 October 2026, 58% are free, freemium or open source, and WorkOS sits in the full browse list rather than the top 30, where Auth0 ranks 14th, Clerk 15th and Stytch 20th.
What is WorkOS?
WorkOS is an enterprise-readiness API for SaaS products, with AuthKit as its user-facing login layer. AuthKit, the User Management product, bundles a hosted UI, email and password, social login, magic link, passkeys, MFA, organizations, role-based access control and session management, all from one integration. Around it sit the products enterprises ask for in security questionnaires: Single Sign-On that works with any SAML or OIDC identity provider, Directory Sync for SCIM provisioning, Audit Logs with SIEM streaming, and Radar for bot and fraud checks. The tool profile is on Toolradar's WorkOS page, and the wider category sits in our authentication pricing comparison.
How WorkOS works
You integrate AuthKit once, through the SDK for your framework or the CLI installer, and every sign-in method is a configuration switch rather than a new integration. When a customer asks for SSO, you create an organization for them and send their IT admin a setup flow; WorkOS handles the handshake with their identity provider behind an OAuth 2.0 style interface, so Okta and Entra look identical to your code. Each configured identity provider is one connection, and each connection is one line on the invoice, which is why the finance team sees WorkOS grow with the customer list rather than with sign-ups. Directory Sync works the same way per connection, pushing user and group changes from the customer's directory into your app. The rough edge is commercial, not technical: a connection costs the same whether the customer has 20 users or 20,000.
WorkOS key features
WorkOS pricing
WorkOS publishes pay-as-you-go prices and a custom Annual Credits plan; there is no monthly subscription and no seat fee. AuthKit is free for the first 1 million monthly active users and then costs $2,500 a month for each additional million. Single Sign-On and Directory Sync are each priced per connection: $125 a month each for 1 to 15 connections, $100 for 16 to 30, $80 for 31 to 50, $65 for 51 to 100, and custom above that. Prices checked October 17, 2026 on WorkOS pricing.
Scenario one: a B2B SaaS with 10,000 monthly active users and 10 enterprise customers on SSO. WorkOS costs $1,250 a month, all of it SSO connections, since the users are free. Clerk Pro costs $700 on monthly billing: $25 for the plan, one connection included, and nine more at $75 each. Stytch costs $625, because its pay-as-you-go tier includes 10,000 users and five SSO or SCIM connections, leaving five to buy at Stytch's per-connection rate, which equals WorkOS's entry rate. Auth0 B2B Essentials costs $2,800: $2,100 at 10,000 users with three connections included, plus seven more at Auth0's per-connection rate. Descope needs Growth at $799 a month billed annually, the first plan with 10 SSO connections, and that plan also covers 25,000 users.
Scenario two: 100,000 users and 20 SSO customers. WorkOS costs $2,375: 15 connections at the top rate and five at the second band. Clerk comes to $2,450, which is $1,025 for the plan with 100,000 retained users plus 19 extra connections at Clerk's flat rate. Auth0 publishes no price at 100,000 users, Stytch publishes no per-user overage rate, and Descope's Growth plan stops at 25,000 users, so those three are quotes at this size. The two published bills differ by the price of one Clerk connection, and WorkOS pulls ahead only once connections pass 15 and its ladder steps down.
The ladder is the thing to model before you sign. A product with 50 customers on SSO pays 15 at the entry rate, 15 at the second band and 20 at the third, which is $4,975 a month on WorkOS against $3,675 of connection fees on Clerk at its flat rate. WorkOS answers that with the custom quote above 100 connections and the Annual Credits plan, so a high-connection product should negotiate rather than pay list. WorkOS pros and cons
What we like
- AuthKit is free for the first 1 million monthly active users, so login costs nothing until a product is large
- SSO works with any SAML or OIDC identity provider, and connection pricing steps down at 16, 31 and 51 connections
- Directory Sync, Audit Logs with SIEM streaming and Radar fraud checks come from the same vendor and the same integration
- No seat fee and no monthly subscription, so a quiet month with zero connections is a zero invoice
What could be better
- Every SSO connection costs the same whether the customer has 20 users or 20,000, which punishes products with many small enterprise accounts
- A customer who wants SSO and SCIM is two connections, so ten such customers are 20 billable lines
- Audit log streaming is priced per SIEM connection on top of SSO, so a security-conscious customer adds a third line
- Discounts below the 51 to 100 band or above 100 connections are only available through a custom contract
Who WorkOS is for
WorkOS suits a B2B SaaS team that sells to a small number of large enterprises and wants SSO, SCIM and audit logs from one vendor without paying per user. A product with 200,000 free-tier users and eight enterprise accounts is its ideal customer: the users cost nothing and the eight connections are a predictable line. It also suits a team that already has login working and only needs the enterprise layer, since SSO and Directory Sync can be bought without moving to AuthKit. Skip it if your enterprise customers are many and small, because 50 SSO connections cost $4,975 a month at list and Clerk's flat per-connection fee is lower from the second connection onward. Skip it too if you want everything inside your database vendor; Supabase and Firebase bundle authentication with hosting and storage, and the backend as a service ranking compares those bundles.
Best WorkOS alternatives
If WorkOS is not the right fit, these are the closest options.
| Tool | Best for | Starts at | |
|---|---|---|---|
| WorkOS | B2B SaaS with few, large enterprise customers that need SSO, SCIM and audit logs | AuthKit free to 1M MAU | Visit → |
| Clerk | Product teams that want prebuilt sign-in components and cheaper per-connection SSO | Hobby free to 50,000 retained users | Visit → |
| Auth0 | Teams that want the longest-established identity platform and can budget per-user B2B pricing | Free to 25,000 MAU | Visit → |
| Stytch | Startups that need a few SSO connections at no cost and want to pay only as usage grows | Pay-as-you-go free to 10,000 MAU with five SSO or SCIM connections | Visit → |
| Descope | Teams that want a no-code login flow builder with SSO connections bundled into fixed plans | Free Forever to 7,500 MAU | Visit → |
The bottom line
WorkOS is worth it when enterprise connections are few and users are many, and it is the wrong buy when the ratio flips. At 10,000 users and 10 SSO customers it costs more than Clerk and Stytch, because every connection is billed from the first one at the top rate. At 100,000 users and 20 connections the gap closes to a single connection fee against Clerk, and past 30 connections the ladder starts to pay off, provided the user count would otherwise be metered elsewhere. Choose Stytch if five connections cover your enterprise pipeline, Clerk if you want the components and a flat fee per extra connection, and Auth0 only if the incumbent's compliance footprint is a requirement. How we compared: prices read on the five vendor pricing pages linked above on October 17, 2026, and scenario totals multiply those published rates; they are not quotes. Louis Corneloup, founder of Toolradar and Dupple, edited the verdict.
