GitHub Copilot vs Claude Code 2026: Cost, Agents, Verdict
GitHub Copilot vs Claude Code in 2026: Copilot Pro at $10 a month against Claude Pro at $20, how AI credits compare with session limits, team costs and a verdict.

Short answer: choose GitHub Copilot if you want AI inside the editor you already use, unlimited completions and the cheapest paid entry at $10 a month on Pro. Choose Claude Code if your work is agent-first, in the terminal, and you want Claude doing multi-file changes from a prompt; it starts on Claude Pro at $20 a month, or $17 billed annually, as of October 2026.
The two are less exclusive than the comparison suggests. Copilot lists Claude models among the ones every plan can call, so a Copilot user already gets Claude inside VS Code; what Claude Code adds is Anthropic's own agent, built around a terminal session that reads the repo, runs commands and edits files. The real choice is which agent drives, and which bill you can predict.
Toolradar data: in Toolradar's October 2026 snapshot, GitHub Copilot is the #2 most-listed alternative among 1,814 developer tools, and its $10 entry price ranks #11 of 62 AI coding tools against a $19.50 median. Claude Code is the #2 most-listed alternative among 161 terminal tools, where its Pro-plan entry price sits above the $10 median. Each is the tool its category is measured against.

How much does each cost for one developer?
On the entry plans, Copilot costs half as much at monthly rates, per GitHub's Copilot plans page and Claude's pricing page, both read in October 2026. Over twelve months that is $120 for Copilot Pro against $200 for Claude Pro paid upfront, or $240 paid month to month, so even Claude's annual discount leaves it $80 a year dearer.
The heavy tiers land at the same price point: Copilot Max and Claude Max 5x both cost $100 a month, Copilot's with $200 of AI credits included, and Max 20x doubles Claude's price according to Anthropic's Max plan article. Claude's Max plans are monthly only, so the annual discount that softens Claude Pro does not exist above it. Copilot's middle step, Pro+ at $39 with $70 of credits, has no direct Claude equivalent.
The sticker understates the difference in what you buy. Copilot's price includes unlimited code completions in your editor, which Claude Code does not attempt to match; Claude's price includes Claude chat for writing and research, which Copilot does not include. A developer who wants both inline completion and Anthropic's agent pays $120 a year for Copilot Pro plus $200 for annual Claude Pro, $320 in total, for the combination.
AI credits versus session limits
The metering models are the biggest practical difference. Copilot measures agent and chat work in GitHub AI Credits: Pro includes 1,500 a month, Pro+ 7,000 and Max 20,000, and usage beyond the allowance is charged at $0.01 per credit, per GitHub's plans documentation. Code completions and next edit suggestions are not billed in credits and stay unlimited on paid plans.
That makes Copilot's bill predictable but uncapped. You know exactly what a credit costs, and a heavy agent month costs more instead of stopping. The risk is the opposite of Claude's: no wall, but a bill that grows with usage unless you set a budget.
Claude Code works on limits instead of credits. Anthropic's Claude Code plan article says Pro and Max both have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, shared across Claude and Claude Code, so a long chat afternoon reduces the agent time left. When you hit a limit, you can enable usage credits on your plan or switch to a Claude Console account billed at standard API rates.
The trade-off is plain. Claude's subscription is a fixed price with a ceiling you can feel mid-task, and its upgrade path is a bigger plan; Copilot's is a base price with a meter, and its upgrade path is a bigger allowance. If long daily agent sessions run into Pro's limits, Max 5x and Max 20x raise the per-session allowance by five and twenty times.
Agents: where the work happens
Claude Code is built as an agent from the start. You describe a task in the terminal, and it reads the codebase, edits files across the repo and runs commands, with IDE extensions available if you prefer to watch the diff in an editor. Our Claude Code review covers the agent in depth, and how to use Claude Code walks through a first session.
Copilot spreads agent work across three surfaces. Agent mode runs inside the IDE on every plan including Free, Copilot CLI brings an agent to the terminal on all individual plans, and the Copilot cloud agent, included from Pro upward, works on GitHub itself. Copilot code review also starts on Pro. Pro+ and Max add delegation to third-party agents, which Pro does not include.
For a GitHub-centred team, the cloud agent and code review are the reason to choose Copilot, because they sit where pull requests already live. For a developer who wants one agent session that does the whole change, Claude Code's terminal-first design is the more direct tool. The GitHub Copilot review lays out how those Copilot surfaces fit together.
Models: Copilot already includes Claude
Copilot's plans page lists Claude, GPT, Gemini and other models as available on every plan, so model choice is not a reason to leave Copilot for Claude Code. What differs is the cost: on Copilot, a model call draws from your AI credits, while on a Claude subscription Claude models are what you get, inside the session and weekly limits.
Claude Code is tied to Anthropic's models. That is a limitation if your team wants to switch providers per task, and a non-issue if Claude is the model you would pick anyway. For a model-level comparison outside these two products, see ChatGPT vs Claude for coding.
What a team of ten pays
For organisations, Copilot is cheaper per seat at the standard tier on either billing term. Copilot Business is $19 per seat a month with 1,900 AI credits per user, and Enterprise is $39 with 3,900, per GitHub's documentation. Claude Team Standard is $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually, and Team Premium, with 5x the usage of a standard seat, costs five times the Standard price on either billing term.
| Ten seats for a year | Cost |
|---|---|
| Copilot Business | $2,280 |
| Claude Team Standard, billed annually | $2,400 |
| Claude Team Standard, billed monthly | $3,000 |
| Copilot Enterprise | $4,680 |
| Claude Team Premium, billed annually | $12,000 |
At the standard tier the gap is small: $120 a year for ten people. The bigger decision is the usage model, because Copilot overage is billed per credit and Claude Team seats work within limits. Claude Enterprise lists the same seat price as annual Team Standard, with a 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates, so its real cost depends on how much the team runs.
Which one should you choose?
Choose GitHub Copilot if you live in VS Code or another IDE, want unlimited completions, work on GitHub and want an agent and code review on pull requests, or need the lowest entry price. Its free plan is also the only way to try either product without paying.
Choose Claude Code if you prefer to hand an agent the whole task from a terminal, already pay for Claude for chat and writing, or want one subscription for both. Claude Pro on annual billing is the cheapest way in, and Max is the step when daily sessions hit the limits.
Run both if completion speed and agent depth both matter: Copilot Pro for the editor plus Claude Pro for the terminal costs $320 a year, less than four months of one Claude Max 5x plan. Annual and team totals are our arithmetic from list prices. Editorial rules sit on the Devshot about page.
FAQ
Is GitHub Copilot or Claude Code better in 2026?
Neither wins every case. GitHub Copilot is the better fit for developers who want AI inside their IDE, unlimited completions and GitHub-native agents and code review. Claude Code is the better fit for terminal-first developers who hand whole tasks to an agent. Pick by where you work, then check the usage model.
Which is cheaper, Copilot or Claude Code?
Copilot, at every entry point. Copilot Pro costs half the monthly price of Claude Pro, and Copilot Business at $19 per seat undercuts Claude Team Standard on either billing term. At the heavy individual tier, Copilot Max and Claude Max 5x cost the same.
Is there a free version of Claude Code or Copilot?
Copilot has one: Copilot Free includes 2,000 completions a month and limited chat and agent use. Claude's Free plan does not include Claude Code, so using Anthropic's agent requires at least Claude Pro.
Can GitHub Copilot use Claude models?
Yes. GitHub lists Claude models alongside GPT, Gemini and others on every Copilot plan. Calls draw from your monthly AI credits, and usage beyond the allowance costs $0.01 per credit.
What happens when I hit my limit?
On Copilot, agent and chat work beyond the monthly credit allowance is billed per credit, while completions stay unlimited. On Claude Code, Pro and Max have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit shared with Claude chat; you can enable usage credits or move to API billing through a Claude Console account.
Can I use Copilot and Claude Code together?
Yes. The two do not conflict: Copilot handles inline completion in the editor and Claude Code handles agent tasks in the terminal. Copilot Pro plus annual Claude Pro costs $320 a year for the pair.
