Best Headless CMS for Developers in 2026
Nine headless CMS platforms compared on free-tier limits, the first paid plan, API overage rates and whether you can self-host, with a five-seat cost scenario.
Sanity is the best headless CMS for most developer teams in 2026: its free plan includes 20 seats and 10,000 documents, and Growth costs $15 per seat a month. Pick Payload or Strapi if you want an MIT-licensed CMS you host yourself for free, and Prismic if you want the cheapest hosted plan, from $10 a month billed annually.
Choose Storyblok when marketers need a visual editor, Hygraph for a GraphQL-native API, and Contentful only when the budget starts at $300 a month on Lite.

- 9 tools compared: Sanity, Payload, Strapi, Storyblok, Contentful, Prismic, Hygraph, Directus, DatoCMS
- Payload (best for: Next.js teams that want the CMS and admin panel inside their own app): Free and open source (MIT); you pay only for hosting; Enterprise features via sales demo.
- Strapi (best for: Teams that want open source today and a managed cloud option later): Community self-hosted free (MIT); Cloud from $35/mo per project; self-hosted Growth $45/mo.
- Storyblok (best for: Agencies and teams where marketers build pages visually from developer components): Free Starter (1 seat, 100k API calls); Growth $99/mo, or $90.75/mo billed annually.
The license is rarely the expensive part of a headless CMS. The bill comes from seats, API calls and a second environment, and those three lines are priced very differently from one vendor to the next. In our five-seat scenario below, Contentful costs twelve times as much as Prismic for the same traffic.
That spread is why this ranking leads with plan limits rather than feature lists. Every price below was read on the vendor's own pricing page on October 18, 2026, and the cost scenario further down uses only prices the vendors print.
Devshot data: Toolradar's headless CMS ranking, last updated October 16, 2026, evaluated 49 headless CMS tools, and 84% of the headless CMS tools it tracks are free, freemium or open source. Among the three open source projects in our list, the GitHub API showed 157,217 stars combined on October 18, 2026: Strapi 73,330, Payload 45,319 and Directus 38,568.

Sanity
The best default in 2026: a free plan with room for a real team, and a per-seat Growth plan with published overage rates.

- Free for 20 seats and 10k documents; Growth $15 per seat a month, up to 50 seats.
Best for: Developer teams that want schemas in code and a customizable React editing studio
Pros
- Free plan includes 20 seats, 1 million API CDN requests and 100 GB of bandwidth a month
- Schemas are defined as code and queried with GROQ, so content models live in your repository
- Growth overages are published: $1 per 250k CDN requests and $0.30 per extra GB of bandwidth
Cons
- Per-seat pricing grows with the team: 20 Growth seats is a different bill from five
- Free plan datasets are public only, and an extra dataset on Growth is a $999 add-on
Payload
An MIT-licensed CMS that installs into a Next.js app, with v3.91.0 shipped October 15, 2026 and a 4.0 beta in progress.

- Runs inside your Next.js app, so there is one codebase and one deploy
- No API call or seat limits from the vendor, because you run it
Cons
- Enterprise features such as SSO and the visual editor sit behind a sales demo with no published price
- A 4.0 beta is in progress (beta.2 on October 16, 2026), so plan for a major upgrade
Strapi

Contentful
The enterprise default, generous on free users but with a steep step from the free plan to the first paid one.
- Pricing
- Free for 10 users and 10k records; Lite $300/mo; Enterprise custom.

Cons
- Free plan holds only 300 records and 1 editor, and blocks usage past its limits
- Paid plans are priced in euros, so the US cost moves with the exchange rate
What it is
A headless CMS is a content backend with no built-in website: editors write in an admin interface, and your code fetches the content over a REST or GraphQL API to render it anywhere. The frontend, framework and hosting stay your choice.
The catch is that every page view of an uncached site can become an API call. That is why the plans below cap API requests, bandwidth and records, and why caching in your frontend decides which tier you need more than the size of your team does.
Why it matters
Three limits decide the real price. The first is seats: Hygraph's free Hobby plan stops at 3, while Sanity's free plan includes 20. The second is API volume, where the free tiers range from 100,000 calls a month on Contentful and Storyblok to 4 million on Prismic. The third is hard caps: Contentful, Prismic and DatoCMS block usage on their free plans instead of billing overages, so a traffic spike can take content offline until the month resets.
Our arithmetic: take a team of five editors and developers, 500,000 API calls and 50 GB of bandwidth a month. Prismic Small covers it at $25 a month billed annually (7 users, 4 million calls). Sanity Growth costs $75 for five seats if the calls go through its API CDN, which includes 1 million requests. Strapi Cloud Starter plus 400,000 extra requests costs $59 a month, so Pro at $90 is the safer pick. Storyblok Growth is $99 a month, Hygraph Growth is $199 because the free plan has 3 seats, and Contentful needs its Lite plan because the free plan allows no overages past 100,000 calls.
Methodology. We read each vendor's pricing page on October 18, 2026, plus each product's own homepage for the features we cite, and the GitHub API for stars and latest releases of the open source projects. We ranked on fit for developer teams: free tier room, price of the first paid plan, overage terms and self-hosting. We ran no benchmarks or hands-on trials. We re-check this page when a vendor changes a plan.
Key features to look for
Pricing
Prices below were read on each vendor's pricing page on October 18, 2026. The cheapest hosted plan for a small team is Prismic, and the cheapest path overall is a self-hosted open source CMS (Payload, Strapi Community or Directus under its grant), where the cost is your own server.
The jump from free to paid is where budgets break. Contentful goes from free straight to Lite with nothing in between, Hygraph from free to $199, and Directus Cloud from a 3-seat free plan to Team. Sanity and Strapi Cloud have lower first steps, and Storyblok sits in the middle with Growth.
Watch the add-ons more than the base plans. A second Contentful Lite Space costs $850 a month, an extra Sanity dataset on Growth $999, and an extra Strapi Cloud environment $60 a month on Starter and Pro. DatoCMS paid plans are priced in euros: check the current price on DatoCMS's site.

The bottom line
Pick Sanity for most developer teams: 20 free seats, schemas in code and a per-seat Growth plan with published overages. Pick Payload if you build on Next.js and want the CMS in your own codebase, and Strapi if you want MIT open source with a managed cloud for later. Choose Prismic for the cheapest hosted plan, Storyblok for visual editing, Hygraph for GraphQL-first content, Directus for an existing SQL database, and Contentful when enterprise governance justifies the price. DatoCMS fits small projects that stay inside its free plan.
