Akamai Linode Review 2026

What a shared CPU Linode costs in a core region in 2026, and which dedicated plans no longer stop at a monthly cap.

TL;DR

Akamai Cloud, the host developers still call Linode, is worth it in 2026 for a shared CPU VM in a core region. Nanode 1 GB is $5/mo in North America, with 1 TB of transfer and a monthly cap, so the month has a ceiling.

Use DigitalOcean when the address should be inside a 2 GiB, 2 vCPU Droplet at $18/mo. Use Vultr when the city is the reason and the $2.50 row is the wrong one, because that row is IPv6 only.

G8 dedicated plans changed on July 1, 2026, and they bill every hour with no monthly cap and no transfer included. A powered-off VM still bills until you delete it, so stopping the box does not stop the charge.

  • Best for: Developers who want a shared CPU VM with a monthly cap and bundled transfer
  • Price as of October 16, 2026: Nanode $5/mo in North America; G8 Dedicated 4x2 is $0.07/hr with 0 TB.
  • Shared plans still cap the month, while G8 dedicated plans since July 2026 have no ceiling.
  • Shared entry: Nanode with 1 GB of RAM and 1 TB outbound
  • G8 dedicated: Hourly billing, and the plan includes no transfer
  • Egress past the bundle: A per-GB rate in core regions past the pool
  • Alternatives covered: DigitalOcean, Vultr, Hetzner, Amazon Lightsail, OVHcloud

Pros

  • North America Nanode includes 1 TB, and the hourly rate stops at a monthly cap
  • Core-region egress past the pool is $0.005 per GB, so an extra terabyte costs $5.12
  • Standard LKE includes the control plane, and you pay for the worker nodes

Cons

  • G8 Dedicated 4x2 is $0.07/hr with 0 TB, and 720 hours is $50.40 before transfer
  • A powered-off Linode keeps billing, and a round-trip resize can pass the original cap
  • Sao Paulo's Nanode is $7.00/mo, not the North America sticker

Best forShared CPU when the month should cap

Buy Akamai when the workload fits a shared CPU plan and the month should stop at a published cap. The plans are still called Linodes, and in the ten North America cities the entry size is the Nanode row.

On July 1, 2026, G8 dedicated Linodes, GPU Linodes, and extra public IPv4 addresses moved to hourly pricing with no monthly cap. Leave one of those on all month and the bill never hits a ceiling. Shared CPU, G6, and G7 still show an hourly rate and a monthly cap, so those are the families you can defend.

Toolradar data: the VPS and cloud infrastructure statistics track 6 published tools as of October 16, 2026, out of 11,245 tools in the directory. Five of those six are labeled strictly paid. Linode has a tool page, and so do DigitalOcean and Vultr.

How we compared: Akamai, DigitalOcean, Vultr, Hetzner, Amazon Lightsail, and OVHcloud, with prices read on October 16, 2026. No server was created for this page. A total that multiplies a published rate by hours or gigabytes is our arithmetic from those pages. The wider sheet is the VPS hosting guide, for ranking hosts rather than pricing this bill.

What is Akamai Cloud (Linode)?

A Linode is a Linux virtual machine you SSH into, sold by Akamai as shared CPU, dedicated CPU, or high memory, so you administer the box. Shared plans start at 1 GB, and dedicated plans start at 4 GB, with high memory when RAM is the shortage.

Shared CPU fits a staging box or a worker that can tolerate a noisy neighbor. Akamai says those cores can burst to 100 percent, and sustained use should stay under 80 percent, including virtualization overhead. That ceiling is why a process that must hold a full core all day needs dedicated CPU.

A process that should sleep when idle belongs on the Heroku review or the Fly.io review, because this is not an app platform. Standard Linode Kubernetes Engine includes the control plane at no extra charge, and you pay for the worker Linodes, NodeBalancers, and volumes. Shared CPU is not sold in distributed compute regions, where plans are dedicated and egress costs more, so those metros are a different buy.

How Akamai Cloud (Linode) works

You pick a region, a plan, and an image, then the hourly rate starts and usage is rounded up to the next hour. A short test still costs a full hour, and a capped plan bills that rate until the cap, then stops. Akamai's own example is a 1 GB VM deleted after 24 hours: 24 times $0.0075, which is $0.18.

Powering the VM off does not end the charge, because RAM and transfer stay reserved until you remove the service. A resize opens a new billable line, and a round trip in the same month can pass the original cap.

Outbound transfer counts when it leaves the data center, and also on a public IPv4 inside that data center. Two boxes in one facility can burn the pool that way. G8 and GPU plans include no transfer, so every gigabyte is metered from the first byte. Most Linodes created outside a VPC get one public IPv4, while extra addresses need a support ticket. Since July 1, 2026, those extra addresses bill the hours used with no monthly cap, and Akamai publishes no single hourly rate for them.

Akamai Cloud (Linode) key features

Shared CPU still has a monthly capEssential
Nanode is 1 shared CPU, 25 GB of disk, and 1 TB of transfer. The next shared sizes step the disk and the transfer bundle with the RAM, so a larger size buys storage and egress together. Sao Paulo's Nanode is $7.00/mo for the same 1 GB shape, a higher rate rather than a discount.
G8 dedicated dropped the capEssential
G8 Dedicated 4x2 is 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM, and 40 GB of disk, billed by the hour, with no transfer included and no monthly cap. Akamai treats a 30-day month as 720 hours, the multiplier before you approve that hour. G6 and G7 dedicated 4 GB plans still have a monthly cap and 4 TB, so price those before an uncapped hour.
Transfer is a pool, then a per-GB rateEssential
Core regions bill overage after the pool, so the bundle is the budget and later traffic is the per-GB rate. Distributed regions charge more per GB and do not sell shared CPU, a poor match for this entry plan. Public IPv4 traffic inside the same data center still counts.
Backups, disks, and a load balancer
Backups start at $2/mo on a 1 GB shared instance and keep four copies. They need unencrypted ext3 or ext4 and skip Block Storage, so an encrypted disk or a volume is not covered. North America block storage is $1.00 for 10 GB, and a Basic NodeBalancer is $10/mo. Object Storage is $0.02 per GB and adds 1 TB outside Jakarta and Sao Paulo.
Managed help is a per-VM fee
Infrastructure management is $100 per compute instance per month, with no contract, enrolled from an existing account. That fee sits on top of the VM, so skip it when you will run the box yourself.
High memory when RAM is the shortage
The high memory 24 GB plan is $60/mo, with 2 CPUs, 20 GB of local disk, and 5 TB of transfer. You are paying for RAM rather than a large disk, so Block Storage adds volume without a bigger CPU plan.

Akamai Cloud (Linode) pricing

The decision below is one always-on VM for a small API, plus one extra terabyte of outbound after the included pool. Prices checked on October 16, 2026 on Akamai's CPU pricing page and the North America sheet.

Stay on shared CPU and the month has a ceiling you can quote. Linode 2 GB is $12/mo in North America, or $0.018 per hour if you delete it early, and it includes 2 TB. Akamai defines a terabyte of compute transfer as 1,024 GB, so that much past the pool at the core rate is $5.12. The VM plus that extra terabyte is $17.12, the figure to set beside the other hosts.

Move a 2 vCPU, 4 GB shape to G8 Dedicated 4x2 and the cap disappears, so the hour is not the month. Akamai's 720-hour month at that hourly rate is $50.40 before a single gigabyte of transfer, because the plan includes no transfer. The G6 dedicated 4 GB row is the capped alternative, with 4 TB included. If you only needed the shared 2 GB plan, G8 is the wrong family.

DigitalOcean's 2 GiB, 2 vCPU Droplet includes 3,000 GiB and a public IPv4, so the address is not a second line. Another 1,024 GiB of outbound is $10.24, so the Droplet plus that extra transfer is $28.24. It also bills while powered off, and bundled plans cap at 672 hours.

Vultr's regular 2 vCPU, 2 GB plan is $15/mo with 3 TB. The cheapest regular row is IPv6 only, so a public A record needs a higher row. Hetzner's June 15, 2026 price list, excluding VAT, puts a new US CPX11 at $20.49/mo before the address. Primary IPv4 is $0.60/mo, so the cap plus one address is $21.09. That plan is 2 shared vCPUs and 2 GB, with at least 1 TB in US locations. Germany and Finland CPX22 is $22.99/mo before IPv4, and EU servers include at least 20 TB. Cost-optimized plans are marked currently not available, so the $6.49 CX23 sticker is not orderable.

Lightsail's US East overage starts at $0.09 per GB, and the IPv6-only bundle is $3.50/mo. OVHcloud's US VPS-1 specs and starting rate are in the table, where the trade is more memory for a bandwidth ceiling.

  • Standard LKE includes the control plane, and you pay for the worker nodes

What could be better

  • G8 Dedicated 4x2 is $0.07/hr with 0 TB, and 720 hours is $50.40 before transfer

  • Sao Paulo's Nanode is $7.00/mo, not the North America sticker

Who Akamai Cloud (Linode) is for

Akamai fits a developer who will stay on shared CPU, delete finished boxes, and keep egress inside the pool. A side-project API, a staging worker, and a shared-CPU node pool are the jobs that cap was built for.

It is a weak default when the core must be dedicated all month. The hour looks cheap until a full month is multiplied and every gigabyte is billed, because nothing is included. Shared CPU is not sold in a distributed metro, so that city cannot run this entry plan.

Skip it when the app should cost nothing while stopped, because power-off keeps the reservation billing. A city-by-city deploy is a closer call on Vultr, and a Germany or Finland VM should be priced on the Hetzner review first. For the database, start with Postgres hosting rather than sizing a Linode around disk. A box you administer yourself is on the self-hosting tools guide, and a page-only front end is the Vercel review.

The bottom line

Order the shared plan when the VM can live in a core region and the month should stop at a cap. Price Nanode or Linode 2 GB from the North America sheet, then add core overage only for transfer past the pool. That sum is the real month, so delete the VM when the work is done, because powering it off keeps the line.

Do not approve a G8 budget from the hourly sticker alone. G8 Dedicated 4x2 includes no transfer, so the full-month total in the table is compute only. The G6 dedicated 4 GB row is the capped dedicated plan if the core cannot be shared.

Choose DigitalOcean when the address should sit inside the Droplet price, and read the DigitalOcean review. Choose Vultr for the city, Hetzner for Germany or Finland, Lightsail to stay on AWS, and OVHcloud for 4 GB at a bandwidth ceiling. A cluster belongs on the Kubernetes tools guide, and smaller stickers are on cheap VPS hosting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Akamai Linode worth it in 2026?

Yes, for a shared CPU VM in a core region, where the monthly cap still exists and transfer is included. It is a weaker buy for G8 dedicated plans, which moved on July 1, 2026 to hourly billing with no monthly cap and no transfer included. A 30-day month at the 4x2 rate is $50.40 before transfer. A powered-off VM still bills until you delete it, so a stopped box is not free.

How much does Linode cost?

In North America, shared Nanode is $5/mo ($0.0075 per hour), Linode 2 GB is $12/mo with 2 TB, and Linode 4 GB is $24/mo with 4 TB, so each step adds memory and transfer. G6 Dedicated 4 GB is $36/mo and G7 Dedicated 4 GB is $43/mo, both with a monthly cap and 4 TB. G8 Dedicated 4x2 is $0.07 per hour with no monthly cap and 0 TB, an open meter rather than a monthly price. High memory 24 GB is $60/mo, backups on a 1 GB shared plan start at $2/mo, and managed service is $100 per instance per month. Prices were read on Akamai's CPU page in October 2026.

Does Linode charge for bandwidth?

Shared, G6, and G7 plans include transfer, from 1 TB on Nanode up to 20 TB on the largest shared size. Past the pool, core regions charge $0.005 per GB, and Akamai counts 1,024 GB as a terabyte, so an extra terabyte is $5.12. Public IPv4 traffic inside the same data center counts toward that pool, so same-facility public traffic is not free. G8 and GPU plans include no transfer, and distributed regions charge more per GB without selling shared CPU.

Is Linode cheaper than DigitalOcean?

On a tiny shared VM, often yes, though the shapes differ and a lower sticker is not the same machine. DigitalOcean's smallest Droplet is $4/mo with 512 MiB and 500 GiB, less memory and less transfer than the capped Nanode. At 2 vCPUs, DigitalOcean's 2 GiB plan is $18/mo with 3,000 GiB and the IPv4 included. Akamai's capped dedicated option is the G6 row, and past the allowance DigitalOcean is $0.01 per GiB while Akamai's core rate is per GB, with prices checked in October 2026.

What are the best Linode alternatives?

DigitalOcean, when you want the 2 GiB, 2 vCPU Droplet with the address included. Vultr, when the city matters and you avoid the $2.50 IPv6-only plan, because the 1 GB regular row is the one with 1 TB. Hetzner, when the server can live in Germany or Finland, where cloud servers include at least 20 TB, or when you will pay the US CPX11 cap before a separate IPv4. Lightsail, when the smallest Linux bundle with a public IPv4 should stay inside AWS. OVHcloud, when the US VPS-1 starting rate and a 500 Mbps ceiling fit.
