Best Authentication Providers in 2026
Ten login products compared on the unit that shows up on the invoice: retained users, monthly actives, an SSO connection, or a server you operate.
Clerk is the best authentication provider for most product teams in 2026. Pro is $25/mo and includes MFA plus one enterprise connection, and the meter ignores a signup that never comes back. WorkOS fits when customers bring an identity provider: AuthKit's first million users are free, and one SSO connection is $125/mo.
Supabase suits an app that already sits on Postgres, because login then shares that project instead of adding another user store. Auth0's B2B Essentials cell at 10,000 users is $2,100/mo, which is the plan that still includes enterprise connections after you leave Free. Skip the cheaper consumer card if a customer will bring SAML. User-count totals for four of these vendors are on authentication pricing compared.

- 10 tools compared: Clerk, WorkOS, Auth0, Supabase Auth, Amazon Cognito, Firebase Authentication, Stytch, Keycloak, FusionAuth, Better Auth
- WorkOS (best for: B2B products whose customers sign in through their own identity provider): AuthKit free through 1M production MAU; SSO from $125 per connection
- Auth0 (best for: Apps that will pay the B2B grid to keep enterprise SSO): Free to 25,000 MAU; B2C Essentials from $35/mo; B2B Essentials from $150/mo
- Supabase Auth (best for: Apps whose database is already Supabase and whose login can share that project): Included with organization Pro; 100,000 MAU, then $0.00325 each
The feature grids overlap, yet a retained-user plan, a monthly-active plan, and a per-connection plan can all advertise MFA and still fail a different month. Pick the meter before the logo. A launch full of one-time signups looks cheap on a retained-user bill and expensive on a monthly-active bill. One customer identity provider can outweigh a large block of ordinary logins, which is why the connection fee belongs beside the user rate.
Toolradar data: the identity and access directory we run listed 103 tools on October 16, 2026. Keycloak is named as an alternative on 59 of those records, and Auth0 on 56, on the identity and access ranking. That shelf is wider than app login, because password managers and workforce suites sit in the same category. This page keeps the customer-login products a product team would actually ship.
Methodology: plan cards, feature rows, and user steps were checked on October 17, 2026, on each vendor's pricing page, plus the product pages for Clerk, Auth0, WorkOS, Cognito, Firebase Authentication, Better Auth, and Keycloak. No production tenant was opened. A total that multiplies a published rate by a user count is our arithmetic, and the sentence says so. The longer Clerk review and Auth0 review stay on those two products.

Clerk
Components for sign-in and organizations, billed on users who return after the first day.
- Pricing
- From $25/mo on monthly Pro; annual billing is a lower rate; Hobby is free
Best for: Product teams that want prebuilt sign-in and have three or fewer dashboard seats
Pros
- Pro includes 50,000 retained users per app, MFA, passkeys, and one enterprise connection.
- Hobby includes that same user cap, three social providers, and a session fixed at seven days.
- SMS on Pro is $0.01 per message in the US and Canada, with international texts at the market rate.
Cons
- Hobby and Pro both stop at three dashboard seats, so a fourth person moves the app to Business at $300/mo.
- Directory Sync past the included connection is priced from January 1, 2027, at $75/mo in the 2 to 15 band.
WorkOS
AuthKit covers the first million production users, then charges a fee for each customer connection.
- Pricing
- AuthKit free through 1M production MAU; SSO from $125 per connection
Best for: B2B products whose customers sign in through their own identity provider
Pros
- The first 1 million production MAU are free, and staging environments are not billed.
- AuthKit includes passwords, social login, passkeys, MFA, and magic auth in one integration.
- The first 15 SSO connections share one published price, and Directory Sync uses that same schedule.
Cons
- Each million MAU past the first million is $2,500/mo, which is where a per-user plan can undercut the connection fee.
- A custom domain is $99/mo, and the Scale support plan is $1,000/mo.
Auth0
Separate B2C and B2B price lists, and Free is the only plan that matches on both.
- Pricing
- Free to 25,000 MAU; B2C Essentials from $35/mo; B2B Essentials from $150/mo
Best for: Apps that will pay the B2B grid to keep enterprise SSO
Pros
- Free covers 25,000 external MAU, passwordless login, five organizations, and one enterprise connection.
- B2B Essentials includes three enterprise connections, and further connections are a monthly add-on up to 30 total.
- Yearly billing charges 11 months, so B2C Essentials at 500 users is $385 for the year.
Cons
- On the B2C feature table, enterprise connections are not available on Essentials or Professional, so the consumer upgrade removes the SAML login.
- Pro MFA is absent on Free, so a second factor is a paid plan on either grid.
Supabase Auth
GoTrue on the same Postgres project, with basic MFA on every plan including Free.
- Pricing
- Included with organization Pro; 100,000 MAU, then $0.00325 each
Best for: Apps whose database is already Supabase and whose login can share that project
Pros
- Pro includes 100,000 MAU and then charges $0.00325 per extra monthly active user.
- Basic MFA is on every plan, including Free. Phone MFA is $75/mo on the first project and $10/mo on each later project.
- SAML on Pro includes 50 MAU and then $0.015 per MAU.
Cons
- A free project pauses after a week idle, and only two free projects can stay active.
- SOC 2 and ISO 27001 sit on Team at $599/mo, not on Pro.
Amazon Cognito
User pools on Lite, Essentials, or Plus, and Essentials is the default for a new pool.
- Pricing
- Essentials and Lite include 10,000 direct MAU free; no monthly minimum
Best for: Teams already in AWS who want user pools without a platform minimum
Pros
- Direct and social sign-in includes 10,000 MAU per account on Essentials or Lite, and that free tier does not end after 12 months.
- Passkeys, email one-time codes, and a managed login editor ship on Essentials.
- AWS's published Essentials example prices each MAU above the free tier at $0.015, and a 950,000-user pool in that example is $14,100.
Cons
- SAML or OIDC federation includes 50 MAU and then the same per-user rate as that Essentials example, on every tier.
- Plus has no MAU free tier, and the published 950,000-user Plus example is $19,000.
Firebase Authentication
FirebaseUI or the Auth SDK until you enable Identity Platform, which switches you onto another meter.
- Pricing
- Base auth on Spark; Identity Platform includes 50,000 MAU on Blaze
Best for: Mobile apps on Firebase that do not need the Identity Platform upgrade yet
Pros
- Email, social, anonymous, and phone sign-in are on the base product, and FirebaseUI is the drop-in screen.
- The docs, updated October 14, 2026, say the Identity Platform upgrade needs no client migration.
- On Blaze after that upgrade, the no-cost band is 50,000 MAU, then $0.0055 through 100,000.
Cons
- Spark projects that take the upgrade are capped at 3,000 daily active users for most providers, and at 2 for SAML.
- US SMS for phone sign-in and MFA is $0.01 per message after the first 10 texts each day.
Stytch
Hosted B2B auth with five SSO or SCIM connections before a per-connection fee.
- Pricing
- Pay as you go is free at the base; 10,000 members and 5 SSO connections included
Best for: B2B SaaS that wants organizations and several SSO connections included
Pros
- Pay as you go includes unlimited external organizations, 10,000 active members, and 1,000 M2M tokens.
- Five SSO or SCIM connections are included, and each connection after that is a separate monthly fee.
- A custom login brand is $99, and device fingerprints past 10,000 are $0.005 each.
Cons
- Pay as you go does not publish a per-member rate past the included 10,000, so the next member is not on the card.
- The 99.99% uptime SLA and a HIPAA BAA are on Enterprise, which is contact sales.
Keycloak
A CNCF identity server you download, with SSO, SAML, and LDAP federation included.
- Pricing
- No license fee; current server distribution is 26.8.1
Best for: Operators who will run an identity server and do not want a user meter
Pros
- The release posted on the project site on October 13, 2026, ships as a Quarkus distribution, a container image, and a Kubernetes operator.
- The server speaks OpenID Connect, OAuth 2.0, and SAML, and it can broker social login or an existing IdP.
- User federation covers LDAP and Active Directory from the admin console, and the account console includes two-factor setup.
Cons
- The project publishes no hosted plan and no support price, so uptime sits with you.
- The JavaScript adapter listed on the downloads page is 26.2.4, which is behind the 26.8.1 server.
FusionAuth
A downloadable auth server whose cloud price steps with monthly active users.
- Pricing
- Self-host Community is free; hosted Community is $37/mo; Starter is $162/mo billed annually
Best for: Teams that want a free self-hosted server and a priced cloud option
Pros
- Community self-host has no license fee, and the hosted card is the paid way to avoid running it.
- Starter stays at the same annual rate for 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 MAU, and it includes breached-password detection.
- Essentials is $240/mo billed annually at 1,000 MAU and $1,500/mo at 10,000 MAU.
Cons
- Starter at 25,000 MAU is $312/mo billed annually, and Starter is not listed past 100,000 MAU.
- Enterprise is contact sales, and FusionAuth does not publish an enterprise price.
Better Auth
A TypeScript framework in your app, plus an optional dashboard if you want audit logs and SSO.
- Pricing
- Framework in your app; Infrastructure Pro is $20/mo with unlimited seats
Best for: TypeScript codebases that will keep authentication in the application
Pros
- The library covers 2FA, passkeys, organizations, and SSO plugins inside the app you deploy.
- Infrastructure Pro includes one self-service SSO connection, and the next connection is $50/mo.
- Pro includes 20,000 audit events a month, then $0.0001 per event, and transactional email at $0.001.
Cons
- The framework does not host the users, so the Pro fee is the dashboard and the detectors, not a user pool.
- The free infrastructure tier is one dashboard seat, 10,000 audit events, and one day of retention.
What it is
An authentication provider is the service, or the server you run, that creates the user, checks the password or the SSO assertion, and hands your app a session. The purchase is the user record and the login screen, not a database and not a workforce directory, so a Postgres search or an employee suite is a different buy.
Hosted products keep that record for you, which is why Clerk, WorkOS, Auth0, Stytch, Cognito, and Firebase Authentication suit a team that wants a vendor on the line when sign-in fails. Supabase Auth joins them only when the project is already Supabase. FusionAuth Community, Better Auth, and Keycloak put the record on infrastructure you patch, which suits a team that already runs that box.
Leaving a hosted pool means exporting the user record, while leaving Keycloak means taking the database you already back up. A consumer app bills people who signed up for your product. A B2B app also has to satisfy the customer's IT team, because they will ask for SAML or OIDC, and sometimes SCIM, before they sign.
Auth0 publishes those buyers as two price lists, so the cheap consumer card can drop the enterprise connection the free plan included. WorkOS and Stytch publish a connection fee, which is the bill when the customer's identity provider is the requirement. Clerk includes one enterprise connection on Pro and prices the next one, so a second customer IdP is another line.
Clerk ships sign-in components for Next.js, React, Expo, and Astro, so a React team can theme a finished form. FirebaseUI, AuthKit, and Cognito's managed login page are vendor screens you configure. Better Auth ships functions you call from your own routes, which is the path when every pixel must be yours. Keycloak ships a server login plus single sign-out across the apps that trust it, so several apps can share one session.
Why it matters
The bill moves when a feature leaves the free plan, which is often before the user count does. MFA, a fourth teammate, or one customer IdP is enough to end a free prototype. Auth0 Free includes one enterprise connection and does not include Pro MFA, so a second factor can push you onto a paid grid that drops that connection. Clerk Hobby includes neither MFA nor that connection, and it stops at three dashboard seats, the same cap as Pro, so a fourth person who needs a second factor is off both plans.
A quiet staging app fails for a different reason than a missing feature. Supabase pauses a free project after a week without traffic, and only two free projects can be active, so a demo you leave untouched can be asleep on Monday. WorkOS does not bill staging environments, so a sales copy stays off the invoice. Cognito's free tier for direct sign-in does not expire after 12 months, so an AWS prototype is not on a countdown.
Self-hosting trades the user meter for a pager. Keycloak, FusionAuth's free Community download, and the Better Auth framework have no end-user price, so the cost is the machine, the upgrade, and the person who answers when login is down. Pair that path with self-hosting tools and a host you already patch. Hosted login next to a hosted database is the other path, covered in the backend-as-a-service roundup and the Supabase review.
Vendor changes to these meters are the sort of note that lands in the Devshot brief. If the frontend host is still open, the Vercel review is the page beside this one, because several of these SDKs assume that deploy target.
Key features to look for
Pricing
Prices below were checked on October 17, 2026. The scenario is one production app, 10,000 users, MFA on, one enterprise SSO connection, and three people who can open the dashboard. Where a vendor publishes that step, the cell is quoted, and where the vendor publishes a rate, the extension is our arithmetic.
Clerk Pro covers this job on the monthly plan if three people can open the dashboard. Users sit inside the retained-user allowance, with MFA and one enterprise connection included, so those requirements do not force a higher plan. A fourth person has no seat on Pro, so the plan becomes Business, a seat change rather than a user-count change. The Clerk pricing page is the source for those rules.
WorkOS prices the connection and not the users, so it wins when a customer identity provider is the requirement and headcount is still inside the free production allowance. One SSO connection is the first-band fee, MFA sits inside AuthKit, and Directory Sync is a second connection on the same schedule if the customer also wants SCIM. A consumer app with no customer IdP never starts that fee. The rates are on the WorkOS pricing page.
Auth0 cannot do this job on the cheap B2C card. Free includes the enterprise connection and excludes Pro MFA, so MFA forces a paid plan, and the B2C table marks enterprise connections unavailable. B2C Essentials at this headcount is $700/mo and still omits the connection, so you can pay and still fail. B2B Essentials at 10,000 users is the $2,100/mo cell, with three connections and Pro MFA included. Skip that cell if the customer's login is not worth it. Those cells are on the Auth0 pricing page. Above them, Enterprise is contact sales and publishes no rate.
Supabase Pro's allowance and basic MFA cover email or social sign-in here, so a second auth vendor would duplicate a database you already run. SAML is a different line: 50 MAU included, then a per-MAU rate. Extending that rate across the other 9,950 users is $149.25, before the organization fee, and Supabase does not publish that total, while phone MFA is a separate project fee. Read both on the Supabase pricing page. The database side of the same invoice is the Supabase vs Firebase note.
Cognito Essentials keeps direct or social users at this size inside the free tier, so this password pool has no user charge. Price it before a specialist when the account is already AWS. Federated SAML or OIDC users sit outside that free tier, and AWS prices them after 50 MAU at the Essentials per-user rate, so a customer IdP starts the bill early. The Lite example for 950,000 direct MAU is $4,405, built from the two published rates on 90,000 MAU and then on 850,000, which describes a large consumer pool rather than this scenario. Machine tokens in the US East (N. Virginia) example are $0.00225 each. The Cognito pricing page is the source, and the product page is Amazon Cognito.
Firebase Authentication on the base product does not use the Identity Platform table, so leave the upgrade off when email and social login are enough. Turning it on drops Spark to 3,000 daily active users for email and social, and Blaze uses monthly-active bands that step down as the pool grows. SAML is free for 50 MAU per project, then a per-MAU rate, a different meter from email. US texts are on the Identity Platform pricing page. Larger totals for Clerk, Auth0, Supabase, and Firebase belong on authentication pricing compared, not in this ranking.
Stytch pay as you go includes this scenario at a free base, so it beats a per-connection card when more than one customer brings an identity provider. It does not publish a per-member price past the included allowance. Fingerprints and the brand fee are optional lines on the Stytch pricing page.
At this headcount, FusionAuth lists Starter at the same annual rate as the smaller step, so that card does not climb, and Essentials at $1,500/mo billed annually is the step that climbs. Self-host Community stays free, hosted Community stays at $37/mo, and Enterprise is contact sales with no published price. Better Auth's framework has no user price, and Infrastructure Pro includes one SSO connection if you want their dashboard. Keycloak has no license line at any user count, so choose it only when someone will run the cluster. Downloads are on keycloak.org, and the cloud steps are on FusionAuth pricing.

The bottom line
Start on Clerk Pro when three people can run the dashboard and you want the components, MFA, and one enterprise connection, and leave it when a fourth teammate needs a seat. Move to WorkOS when the paid line is the customer's identity provider and the user count can still grow inside the free million. Stay on Supabase Auth when the rows are already in that Postgres project, and read the Firebase review before you upgrade Authentication to Identity Platform.
Choose Auth0 when you will live on the B2B list on purpose, and skip the consumer card if a customer still needs SAML. Choose Cognito when the account is already AWS and direct sign-in fits the free tier, not when users arrive through a customer identity provider. Choose Stytch when several SSO connections should be included before a connection fee. Choose Keycloak, FusionAuth, or Better Auth when you will carry the pager that replaces the invoice.
