Doppler Review

What Doppler costs per human seat, what each plan unlocks, where the limits bite, and how four secrets managers price the same team.

TL;DR

Doppler is worth it in 2026 for a team that wants one place for environment variables and a bill that only counts people. The Developer plan is free for 3 users and $8 a month for each extra user, and Team costs $21 per user a month, read on Doppler's pricing page on October 21, 2026. Service accounts and other machine identities cost nothing extra on plans that include them.

The catch is that Team charges every user in the workplace the same rate, so a 20-person engineering org pays for 20 Team seats even if half of them only read secrets. Custom roles and user groups are $9 add-ons per seat, and dynamic secrets, SCIM and on-prem sit in Enterprise, which is quote only.

  • Best for: Teams of 5 to 50 engineers syncing secrets to many deploy targets with many machine identities
  • Price as of October 25, 2026: Developer free for 3 users, then $8/user/month; Team $21/user/month; Enterprise custom.
  • Hosted secrets manager with a strong CLI and per-human pricing that leaves machine identities free.
  • Free plan: Developer plan, free for 3 users
  • Team plan: Per human seat, billed monthly and prorated
  • Machine identities: Not billed on any plan that supports them
  • Alternatives covered: Infisical, Bitwarden Secrets Manager, AWS Secrets Manager, HashiCorp Vault

Pros

  • Service tokens and service accounts cost nothing, so 150 CI jobs and agents bill the same as 15.
  • The free Developer plan covers 3 users, the CLI, API access and 5 config syncs with no card at signup.
  • Team bundles SAML SSO, role-based access, rotation and 90 days of logs in one per-seat price.

Cons

  • Every workplace user pays the same plan rate, so read-only users cost as much as admins on Team.
  • Custom roles and user groups are $9 per seat add-ons, and SCIM and dynamic secrets need Enterprise.

Doppler is a hosted secrets manager built around the developer workflow: you keep secrets in projects and environments, pull them into a local shell with its CLI, and sync them out to Vercel, AWS, GitHub Actions and other targets.

Its pricing message is the selling point: per-seat fees for humans, nothing for the apps, pipelines and AI agents that read secrets.

That split matters more in 2026 than it used to. Every CI job, preview deployment and coding agent now needs credentials, and secrets managers that bill per identity or per secret turn that growth into a bigger invoice. Doppler's model keeps the bill flat as machines multiply, and pushes the cost onto headcount instead.

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 868 security tools as of October 20, 2026, and 45% of them are free, freemium or open source, according to its security software ranking.

On the Doppler page, Toolradar data for October 2026 places Doppler #15 (joint) by rating among the 308 security tools with 20 or more reviews.

How we compared: every price was read on the vendor's own page on October 21, 2026: Doppler pricing, Infisical pricing, Bitwarden Secrets Manager, AWS Secrets Manager pricing and HashiCorp pricing for HCP Vault Dedicated.

Costs below are our arithmetic on those list prices; we did not run workloads on any of them.

What is Doppler?

Doppler is a secrets management platform delivered as SaaS, with an on-prem option for Enterprise customers. Secrets live in projects, each project holds environments such as development, staging and production, and each environment holds configs.

Developers use the Doppler CLI to inject a config into a local process, so nobody copies a .env file over Slack. Applications and pipelines authenticate with service tokens or, on Team and above, service accounts, and integrations push configs into the platforms where code runs.

The 2026 pitch leans on AI agents. Doppler's pricing page lists an official MCP server on its plans and says agents and non-human identities ride free, which is aimed at teams wiring coding agents into repositories that need real credentials.

If you are still choosing where those workloads run, the dev tools for startups guide covers the wider stack Doppler plugs into.

How Doppler works

You create a workplace, add projects, and pick a plan. The Developer plan is generous on features and tight on scale: up to 25 users, 10 projects, 4 environments, 50 service tokens, 5 config syncs and 3 days of activity logs.

Team lifts those ceilings to 500 users, 250 projects, 15 environments, 500 service tokens and 100 config syncs, keeps 90 days of activity logs, and adds the controls a security review asks about: SAML SSO, role-based access, change requests, automatic secret rotation, trusted IPs and service accounts.

Billing is monthly and prorated. Doppler's FAQ says it charges per seat per month and that moving from Developer to Team mid-month bills only the time on the paid plan. It does not ask for a card at signup; the Team trial lasts 14 days, and you can cancel or downgrade at any time.

A user is anyone with their own login in your workplace, and all users are billed at the same plan rate. With no base, licensing or usage fees on top, a Team budget is a single multiplication: people with logins times the per-user price.

Doppler key features

Config syncsEssential
Integrations push a config to targets such as Vercel, Heroku, GitHub and AWS Secrets Manager. Developer allows 5 syncs, Team 100, and an add-on raises Team to 500.
Doppler CLIEssential
Injects secrets into a local process or script at run time, with personal configs per developer, so local work stops depending on a shared .env file.
Free machine identitiesEssential
Service tokens on every plan and service accounts on Team cost nothing extra, so CI jobs, preview environments and agents do not raise the bill.
Change requests and RBAC
Team adds role-based access and change requests for edits to sensitive configs. Enterprise adds change request policies and custom permissions.
Automatic rotation
Team includes automatic secret rotation. Enterprise adds proxied and on-prem secret rotation, plus dynamic secrets for short-lived credentials.
On-prem and EKM
Enterprise can run Doppler on-prem and use enterprise key management, the route for teams whose compliance rules keep keys in their own infrastructure.

Doppler pricing

Doppler publishes every price except Enterprise on its pricing page, read on October 21, 2026. The model is human seats only, so the bill tracks headcount, not secrets, API calls or connected apps.

Small teams pay little or nothing. On Developer, a 5-person team pays for 2 extra users, $16 a month, and a 10-person team pays $56 a month for 7 extra users, our arithmetic on the per-user price. That plan has no SSO, no role-based access and only 3 days of logs, so most companies outgrow it on controls before they outgrow it on seats.

Team is where the real cost starts. Ten users on Team cost $210 a month, or $2,520 over 12 monthly bills. Adding custom roles and user groups for those 10 seats adds $180 a month, which takes the total to $390. Nonprofits, students and educators can ask for a 33% discount on Team.

The rivals price on a different unit. Infisical bills each identity, human or machine, so 10 developers plus 15 machine identities on Pro come to $575 a month on monthly billing, or $500 a month billed annually.

Bitwarden Secrets Manager Teams is $6 per user a month on an annual subscription, with 20 machine accounts included.

AWS Secrets Manager bills $0.40 per secret a month plus $0.05 per 10,000 API calls, so 200 secrets are $80 a month before calls.

HCP Vault Dedicated Essentials starts at $1.58 per cluster hour plus $73 a month per Vault client, which is about $1,153 a month for one cluster before clients at a 730-hour month, on HashiCorp's pricing page.

Doppler pros and cons

What we like

  • Service tokens and service accounts cost nothing, so 150 CI jobs and agents bill the same as 15.
  • The free Developer plan covers 3 users, the CLI, API access and 5 config syncs with no card at signup.
  • Team bundles SAML SSO, role-based access, rotation and 90 days of logs in one per-seat price.

What could be better

  • Every workplace user pays the same plan rate, so read-only users cost as much as admins on Team.
  • Custom roles and user groups are $9 per seat add-ons, and SCIM and dynamic secrets need Enterprise.

Who Doppler is for

Doppler fits a team of roughly 5 to 50 engineers that deploys to several platforms and wants one source of truth for configuration. The CLI fixes local development, the syncs fix drift between Vercel, a container host and CI, and the bill does not move when you add pipelines or agents.

It is the strongest fit when machine identities outnumber people. A team with 10 developers and dozens of services, preview environments and CI runners pays the same Team bill whether there are 15 machines or 150, which is where per-identity pricing elsewhere gets expensive.

Skip Doppler if most of your users only read secrets, because every login pays the Team rate. Skip it too if you are all-in on AWS with a modest secret count, where the native per-secret pricing can cost less, or if compliance requires self-hosting without an Enterprise contract.

Teams standardizing their delivery pipeline should read the CI/CD tools ranking and the CI/CD pricing comparison, since CI runners are a common consumer of service tokens.

Infrastructure-as-code shops can pair it with the picks in Terraform and IaC tools, and cluster operators with Kubernetes tools.

The bottom line

Doppler is worth paying for when the people count is stable and the machine count keeps climbing. Start on the free Developer plan, move to Team when you need SSO and role-based access, and price add-ons before you assume Team covers fine-grained permissions.

Choose Infisical when you want an open-source codebase and dynamic secrets below Enterprise. Choose Bitwarden Secrets Manager when the per-user price matters most and your machine accounts fit its caps.

Choose AWS Secrets Manager when everything runs in one AWS account, and HashiCorp Vault when a platform team needs dynamic credentials across datacenters and can run it.

The deploy targets Doppler syncs to are covered in the Vercel review, the Railway review, the Render review and the Fly.io review.

For agent setups, the MCP servers for developers list shows what else needs credentials.

Frequently asked questions

Is Doppler worth it in 2026?

Yes, for teams that sync secrets to several platforms and run many pipelines, services or agents. Doppler bills only human seats, so machine identities do not raise the bill, and the CLI removes shared .env files from local development. It is a weaker fit when most users only read secrets, since every user pays the same Team rate, or when you need SCIM or dynamic secrets without an Enterprise contract. Prices were read on Doppler's pricing page on October 21, 2026.

How much does Doppler cost?

The Developer plan is free for 3 users and $8 a month for each additional user, up to 25 users. Team is $21 per user a month, billed monthly and prorated, with a 14-day trial. Team add-ons for custom roles, user groups and extra integration syncs are $9 per seat a month each, and Enterprise is custom priced.

Does Doppler charge for service accounts or AI agents?

No. Doppler's pricing is based on per-seat fees for human users only, with no licensing, base or usage fees. Service tokens are available on every plan, and service accounts and other machine identities are included at no extra cost on the plans that support them, which starts at Team.

Is Doppler cheaper than Infisical?

It depends on how many machine identities you run. Infisical Pro is $23 per identity a month on monthly billing and counts machines as identities, so 10 developers and 15 machines cost $575 a month. On Doppler Team, also billed monthly, the same team pays only for the 10 humans, $210 a month. Even with no machines, Doppler Team is $2 a month cheaper per person than Infisical Pro billed monthly.

Does Doppler have a free plan?

Yes. The Developer plan is free for 3 users and includes the CLI, integrations, service tokens, API and webhook access, 5 config syncs and 3 days of activity logs. It allows up to 25 users, 10 projects and 4 environments, and Doppler does not ask for a credit card at signup.
