Twilio SMS Pricing 2026: Per-Segment Cost, Numbers, Carrier Fees
Twilio SMS pricing in 2026: $0.0083 per US segment in or out, $0.022 per MMS, $1.15 a month per long code, plus carrier and 10DLC fees. Three real bills.

Twilio charges $0.0083 per SMS segment in the US, outbound or inbound, on long codes, toll-free numbers and short codes alike. Outbound MMS is $0.022 per message, a long code rents for $1.15 a month and a toll-free number for $2.15. Carrier fees of $0.0035 to $0.005 per segment and 10DLC registration fees come on top. Prices read on Twilio's US pricing page, October 2026.
The headline rate is roughly two thirds of what you pay per message. Once a carrier fee lands on every segment, a one-segment text to an AT&T subscriber costs $0.0118 and one to Verizon costs $0.0133, before number rental and registration. The rest of this page lists every line on a US messaging invoice, shows how segments multiply the bill, and works out three monthly bills a developer would actually run.
Toolradar data: on Toolradar, the software directory we run, the Twilio alternatives page lists 8 options as of October 2026, 5 of them direct competitors and 3 with a free plan. The SMS marketing ranking tracks another 25 tools. Twilio's own record sits on its Toolradar tool page.

How much does Twilio SMS cost per message?
The base rate is the same in both directions, per segment. A two-way product pays for the user's reply exactly as it pays for its own message, which surprises teams that budget only for outbound notifications. Twilio publishes the same base rate for long codes, toll-free numbers and short codes, so the number type changes your fixed costs and throughput, not the per-message rate.
The carrier fee is the second half of every message. US carriers add a per-segment charge that Twilio passes through without markup, and the amount depends on which network the recipient uses. On a long code, outbound SMS carrier fees are:
| Recipient's carrier | Carrier fee per outbound SMS segment (long code) | Base plus carrier fee |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T | $0.0035 | $0.0118 |
| T-Mobile | $0.0045 | $0.0128 |
| Verizon | $0.005 | $0.0133 |
| US Cellular | $0.005 | $0.0133 |
| All other carriers | $0.0042 | $0.0125 |
You cannot choose the carrier mix of your users, so plan with a range. A blended effective rate between $0.0118 and $0.0133 per segment is the honest planning number for US traffic, and the high end sits 13% above the low end. Twilio's 10DLC help article adds that volume pricing can apply to Twilio's own fee, but the carrier fee is the same on every segment regardless of volume.
Segments: why one message can cost two or three times the rate
Twilio bills SMS per segment, not per message, and the segment size depends on the characters you use. Twilio's character-limit documentation sets out the rules:
- Plain GSM-7 text: 160 characters fit in one segment. Longer messages split into segments of 153 characters each.
- Any UCS-2 character (an emoji, a Chinese character, even a curly quotation mark): the limit drops to 70 characters, and longer messages split into 67-character segments.
- Ceiling: Twilio accepts messages up to 1,600 characters, and recommends staying under 320 for deliverability.
One emoji in a 120-character alert turns one segment into two. At the AT&T rate, 10,000 of those alerts cost $236 instead of $118, because both the base rate and the carrier fee double. A templating library that inserts smart quotes does the same thing without anyone noticing. Twilio's Smart Encoding feature swaps common non-GSM characters for GSM equivalents, and it is worth switching on before launch.
For longer messages, MMS can come out cheaper. MMS is billed at a flat rate per message for up to 1,600 characters, but its carrier fees are higher than SMS: $0.009 at AT&T and $0.01 at T-Mobile on a long code. Computed per message from Twilio's tables:
| Message length (GSM-7) | As SMS, AT&T | As MMS, AT&T | As SMS, T-Mobile | As MMS, T-Mobile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 306 characters (2 segments) | $0.0236 | $0.031 | $0.0256 | $0.032 |
| Up to 459 characters (3 segments) | $0.0354 | $0.031 | $0.0384 | $0.032 |
Two segments stay cheaper as SMS; from three segments, MMS wins on both carriers. For a delivery update or a receipt that runs past 306 characters, sending it as MMS lowers the per-message cost and keeps it as one message on the handset.
Phone numbers and registration: the fixed costs
Every sender needs a number, and each number type carries a different fixed bill. Computed over a year from Twilio's listed prices:
| Number type | Rental over 12 months | Registration on top | First-year fixed cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long code, Low Volume Standard brand | $13.80 | $4.50 brand + $15 campaign vetting + $1.50/mo campaign | $51.30 |
| Long code, Standard brand | $13.80 | $46 brand (includes secondary vetting) + $15 vetting + $10/mo campaign | $194.80 |
| Toll-free number | $25.80 | Toll-free verification instead of 10DLC | $25.80 |
| Random short code | $4,000 | One-time setup fee | $4,000 plus setup |
| Vanity short code | $6,000 | One-time setup fee | $6,000 plus setup |
The 10DLC fees come from Twilio's A2P 10DLC fee article, read October 18, 2026. The registry raised several of them on August 1, 2025: brand registration went from $4 to $4.50 and standard vetting from $40 to $41.50, and a new $12.50 Authentication Plus fee now applies to each retry for public for-profit brands. A rejected registration costs money every time you resubmit it, so read the brand requirements before the first attempt.
Which brand type you get depends on volume. Low Volume Standard needs a Tax ID (EIN) and suits under 6,000 messages a day, and its mixed campaign is capped at 2,000 segments and MMS a day toward T-Mobile. Standard brands are for higher traffic. Sole proprietors without an EIN register a Sole Prop brand at $4.50 with a $2 monthly campaign.
The toll-free route has the lowest first-year fixed cost for a small sender, because 10DLC registration applies only to long codes. Toll-free numbers must pass Twilio's toll-free verification before they can send, and Twilio's rate card lists no fee for that step. The trade-off is the number itself: a toll-free sender reads as a business line, while a local 10-digit code reads as a person or a local shop. Short codes only make sense for high-throughput programs where $4,000 a year is small next to the message bill.
Three monthly bills, worked out
The scenarios below use only Twilio's listed rates, single-segment GSM-7 messages and the carrier range from the table above (AT&T at the low end, Verizon at the high end). They exclude volume discounts, which Twilio does not publish for US SMS, and inbound carrier fees.
1. A two-factor login flow, 10,000 codes a month. Base rate $83.00, carrier fees $35.00 to $50.00, one long code at $1.15 and a Low Volume Standard campaign at $1.50. The monthly bill is $120.65 to $135.65, plus $19.50 once for brand registration and vetting. That works out to roughly 1.2 to 1.4 cents per code. If you only need codes, compare this with an auth provider that bundles SMS delivery; our authentication pricing comparison and Clerk pricing pages list those per-SMS charges, the Firebase review covers how Google bills phone sign-in, and best authentication providers ranks the field.
2. A support line, 20,000 outbound messages and 5,000 replies. Outbound base $166.00, inbound base $41.50, outbound carrier fees $70.00 to $100.00, one long code and a Standard campaign at $10. The monthly bill is $288.65 to $318.65, with $61 once for a Standard brand and vetting. The replies alone add $41.50, about 14% of the low-end total, which is why a support product should model inbound volume from day one.
3. The same support line with link tracking on every message. Twilio's Engagement Suite adds link shortening, click tracking and scheduling at $0.015 per outbound SMS, with the first 1,000 free each month. On 20,000 messages that is 19,000 billable at $0.015, or $285.00 extra, nearly doubling the bill from scenario 2. The Compliance Toolkit carries the same per-message rate. If you only need short links, generating them in your own app is far cheaper at this volume.
Hidden costs and limits to plan for
- Failed messages still cost something. Each message that ends in Failed status adds $0.001, so a list full of dead numbers costs money even when nothing is delivered.
- Short codes need a setup fee on top of rental, and every MMS-enabled short code adds a $500 one-time fee at purchase.
- Traffic Optimization Engine starts at $300 a month for throughput management across senders, a line item that appears only at larger scale.
- RCS carrier fees are higher than SMS. RCS rich text uses the same base rate as SMS, but the outbound carrier fee is $0.0045 at AT&T and $0.0062 at T-Mobile.
- Volume discounts are a conversation, not a table. Twilio's US page says discounts grow with volume and points high-volume senders to its account team and to committed-use contracts.
- Prices can change without notice, per the footnote on Twilio's own table, so recheck the rate card before a budget review.
Is Twilio the cheapest option for US SMS?
No. Twilio's list rate sits above several competitors, and our cheapest SMS API comparison ranks Bird, Telnyx and Plivo against it for a high-volume one-time-code workload. Twilio's case is breadth rather than price: one account covers SMS, MMS, RCS, toll-free and short codes, plus voice and email through SendGrid. For teams that also send transactional email, Resend vs SendGrid, the Resend review and the best transactional email APIs cover that side of the stack. Teams wiring SMS into no-code flows can start with n8n vs Zapier.
Pick Twilio when you want one vendor for every channel and a free trial with no credit card. Look elsewhere when SMS volume is high enough that a fraction of a cent per segment adds up to real money, or when your only need is login codes that an auth provider can send for you. The Plivo and Telnyx Toolradar records list their own pricing and alternatives.
How we checked these prices
Louis Corneloup, founder of Dupple and Toolradar, wrote this pricing breakdown for Devshot readers. Messaging rates, carrier fees, number prices, feature add-ons and the trial terms come from Twilio's US SMS pricing page. Registration fees come from Twilio's A2P 10DLC fee article and segment rules from Twilio's SMS character limit documentation, all read on October 18, 2026. Every monthly bill and yearly total on this page is our own arithmetic from those listed prices. Toolradar counts come from its live alternatives and SMS marketing pages that month.
FAQ
How much does Twilio charge per SMS in 2026?
Twilio charges $0.0083 per SMS segment in the US, outbound or inbound, on long codes, toll-free numbers and short codes. A carrier fee set by the recipient's network applies on top of each outbound segment, so a one-segment text costs $0.0118 to $0.0133 before number rental and registration.
How much does a Twilio phone number cost?
A US long code costs $1.15 a month and a toll-free number $2.15 a month, or $0.50 for either if you bring your own number. Short codes are $1,000 per quarter for a random number and $1,500 for a vanity number, plus a one-time setup fee.
What are Twilio's 10DLC fees?
Brand registration is $4.50 one-time for Sole Proprietor and Low Volume Standard brands and $46 for Standard brands, which includes secondary vetting. Each campaign has a $15 vetting fee, then a monthly fee from $1.50 for low-volume mixed use to $10 for Standard campaigns. These fees apply only to 10-digit long codes.
Does Twilio charge for incoming SMS?
Yes. Inbound SMS is billed at the same per-segment rate as outbound, and inbound MMS costs $0.0165 on long and short codes or $0.02 on toll-free numbers. Twilio's carrier table also lists inbound fees on some networks, so a two-way product should budget for replies.
Is MMS cheaper than SMS on Twilio?
For long messages, yes. MMS is a flat $0.022 per message for up to 1,600 characters, while SMS is billed per segment. Including carrier fees at AT&T, a three-segment SMS costs $0.0354 against $0.031 as MMS, while a two-segment SMS stays cheaper at $0.0236.
Does Twilio offer volume discounts or a free trial?
Twilio offers a free trial with no credit card required. It does not publish volume tiers for US SMS: its pricing page says discounts grow with volume and refers high-volume senders to its account team or a committed-use contract. Carrier fees are passed through unchanged at any volume.
