Best Observability Tools for Startups in 2026
Eight platforms priced for a five-engineer team sending 100 GB of logs and 50 GB of traces a month, with every rate read on the vendor's pricing page in October 2026.
Short answer: Grafana Cloud is the best observability tool for most startups in 2026, because its free tier (10,000 metric series, 50 GB of logs, 50 GB of traces) carries a seed-stage product and the Pro plan then bills $19 a month plus usage. Pick SigNoz if you want one OpenTelemetry-native bill with a low monthly minimum, Better Stack if uptime checks and on-call matter more than tracing, and Sentry alongside any of them for errors. Our cost scenario below prices a five-engineer team sending 100 GB of logs and 50 GB of traces a month: $62.50 on Grafana Cloud, $25 on Axiom, $129 on New Relic and $470 on Datadog before a single indexed log. All rates were read on the vendors' pricing pages in October 2026.

- 8 tools compared: Grafana Cloud, SigNoz, Better Stack, Sentry, New Relic, Axiom, Honeycomb, Datadog
- SigNoz (best for: OpenTelemetry-first teams that want one bill for logs, traces and metrics): Self-hosted free; Teams cloud $49/mo minimum, logs and traces $0.30/GB; discounted startup rate
- Better Stack (best for: Small teams that want uptime checks, paging and a log store on one predictable invoice): Free: 10 monitors, 3 GB logs; $21/mo per 50 monitors, $29/mo per responder, Nano telemetry $38/mo (yearly, US)
- Sentry (best for: Every application team, as the error layer next to whichever platform wins the rest): Developer free (1 user, 5,000 errors); Team $26/mo billed annually, Business $80/mo
A startup does not need the most complete observability platform. It needs the one whose bill stays flat while the team doubles and the log volume triples, because both will happen before the next funding round.
That rules out per-host pricing early and per-seat pricing later, which is why this ranking leads with what each vendor charges for and only then with what it shows you.
The eight tools below were chosen for a team of three to fifteen engineers with no platform group: everyone instruments, two people are on call, and nobody wants to run a Prometheus cluster.
Each one gets a real weakness.
The comparison this page does not make is against self-hosting, which is covered in our best monitoring tools ranking, and the cheaper-than-Datadog angle is priced at ten hosts in Datadog alternatives.
Devshot data: of the 210 monitoring tools tracked on Toolradar, the software directory we run, 64% (134 of 210) offer a free tier as of October 17, 2026. A startup that pays for observability in its first year is choosing to, not forced to.

Grafana Cloud
Managed Prometheus, Loki and Tempo with the biggest free tier on this list and a usage bill that tracks data, not hosts.
- Pricing
- Free: 10k series, 50 GB logs, 50 GB traces; Pro is a small platform fee plus usage
Best for: Startups that want the largest free tier and a credible exit to self-hosting
Pros
- Free tier covers 10,000 metric series, 50 GB of logs, 50 GB of traces and 3 users with 14-day retention, enough for a seed-stage product
- Pro logs and traces cost $0.55 per GB in total (process, write, retain), so 100 GB of logs above the allowance is $27.50
- Incident response, synthetics, k6 load testing and frontend observability sit on the same account with their own free allowances
Cons
- Metrics bill per 1,000 active series at $6.50, so one high-cardinality label (user ID, request ID) multiplies the invoice with no traffic change
- Assembling metrics, logs and traces into one view takes more configuration than an all-in-one suite, and Enterprise starts at a $25,000 yearly commitment
SigNoz
An open-source, OpenTelemetry-native observability platform whose cloud plan starts at a monthly minimum that is also your usage credit.
- Pricing
- Self-hosted free; Teams cloud $49/mo minimum, logs and traces $0.30/GB; discounted startup rate
Best for: OpenTelemetry-first teams that want one bill for logs, traces and metrics
Pros
- Logs and traces at $0.30 per GB ingested with 15-day retention, and metrics at $0.10 per million samples, with unlimited team members on every plan
- A startup program at a reduced monthly rate for 12 months for companies under three years old, under 30 employees and under $6 million raised
- The same product runs self-hosted under an open-source licence, so the cloud bill is a convenience you can drop
Cons
- No external uptime checks or on-call paging, so you still need a status and alerting tool
- Enterprise starts at $4,000 a month, a wide gap above Teams for a company that outgrows self-serve
Better Stack
Uptime monitoring and on-call first, with telemetry sold in fixed GB bundles so the bill never surprises you.
- Pricing
- Free: 10 monitors, 3 GB logs; $21/mo per 50 monitors, $29/mo per responder, Nano telemetry $38/mo (yearly, US)
Best for: Small teams that want uptime checks, paging and a log store on one predictable invoice
Pros
- Team members with dashboard access are free; only the people who take pages pay the $29 responder seat on yearly billing
- Telemetry bundles are fixed sizes, Nano at 40 GB each of logs, traces and metrics and Micro at 160 GB, so the cost is known before the month starts
- 30-second uptime checks, heartbeats, status pages and phone and SMS alerting are included rather than add-ons
Cons
- No per-host APM with service maps or continuous profiling, so deep latency work lands in another tool
- The free plan retains logs and traces for only 3 days, and US-region bundles cost more than the Europe-region ones
Sentry
Not a full observability platform, and still the single most useful tool a startup can add in an afternoon.
- Pricing
- Developer free (1 user, 5,000 errors); Team $26/mo billed annually, Business $80/mo
Best for: Every application team, as the error layer next to whichever platform wins the rest
Pros
- Team at $26 a month includes unlimited users, 50,000 errors, 5 million spans and 50 session replays with up to 90-day lookback
- Logs and metrics are pay as you go at $0.50 per GB, cron monitoring at $0.78 per monitor and uptime alerts at $1.00 each on Business
- Error grouping, release tracking and replay resolve the bug class that logs alone describe badly
Cons
- No infrastructure monitoring; hosts, containers and databases need one of the other seven tools
- The Developer plan is one user, so the first teammate forces the paid tier
New Relic
The broadest free tier in the commercial suites, billed on gigabytes and seats rather than hosts.
- Pricing
- Free: 100 GB/mo ingest and 1 full user; then $0.40/GB plus full-platform seats from $10 first, $99 each after
Best for: Startups with heavy telemetry and two or three engineers who need the full dashboards
Pros
- 100 GB of ingest a month, unlimited basic users and one full-platform user cost nothing and the allowance is permanent
- No per-host or per-container charge, so an autoscaling cluster costs the same as a single VM at equal data volume
- APM, infrastructure, logs, browser and synthetics (500 checks free) in one product with NRQL across all of it
Cons
- Standard caps full-platform users at five; Pro seats then cost $349 a month each on an annual commitment, which turns a 12-engineer team into a four-figure seat bill
- Data Plus retention and compliance features add $0.60 per GB instead of $0.40, and ingest stops at the free limit until you add a card
Axiom
An event store that charges for loading, querying and storing data, with a free tier that absorbs 500 GB a month.
- Pricing
- Personal free: 500 GB/mo loading, 25 GB storage, 30-day retention; Cloud $25/mo plus usage above 1 TB
Best for: Log-heavy startups that want cheap ingest and a query bill instead of a seat bill
Pros
- The permanent free plan includes 500 GB of data loading a month, 25 GB of storage and 30-day retention
- Axiom Cloud bundles 1 TB of loading, 100 GB-hours of query compute and 100 GB of storage into the platform fee
- Loading above the allowance is $0.12 per GB, among the lowest ingest rates on this list
Cons
- Query compute is its own meter at $0.20 per GB-hour, so a team that runs wide dashboards all day pays for the habit
- SSO, RBAC and directory sync are self-serve add-ons at $50 to $100 a month each rather than plan features
Honeycomb
Event-based observability that prices the data and never the people, built for questions nobody wrote a dashboard for.
- Pricing
- Free: 20M events/mo, unlimited seats; Pro from $150/mo for 750M events; Enterprise custom
Best for: Teams debugging high-cardinality distributed systems who refuse to pay per seat
Pros
- Unlimited seats on every plan including Free, so the whole company can query without a licensing conversation
- Pro covers 750 million events and 3.75 billion metric data points with SSO and 100 triggers
- BubbleUp and native OpenTelemetry tracing answer why one tenant is slow faster than log search does
Cons
- Events are not gigabytes, so a log-heavy stack needs its own volume maths before the bill is predictable
- No uptime checks, status pages or on-call paging, and Enterprise starts at a base of 10 billion events a year
Datadog
The most complete platform here and the one whose per-host, per-product meters grow fastest with a container fleet.
- Pricing
- Free for 5 hosts; Infrastructure Pro $15/host/mo annual, APM $31/host/mo, logs billed per GB on top
Best for: Funded startups that want every product on one agent and will govern spend from day one
Pros
- More than 1,000 integrations and one agent cover infrastructure, APM, logs, RUM, synthetics and security
- No per-user charge, so a 20-engineer team pays the same as a 3-engineer team at equal hosts
- Flex Storage keeps logs queryable at $0.05 per million events stored, far below standard indexing
Cons
- Ten hosts with APM already cost $460 a month on annual billing before any log is indexed, the highest entry on this list
- Standard log indexing at $1.70 per million events on annual billing ($2.55 on demand) is the usual source of a surprise invoice
What it is
An observability tool collects metrics, logs and traces from a running system and lets you query them together to explain an incident you did not predict.
For a startup the practical definition is narrower: one place where an error, the trace behind it and the host it ran on appear within a minute of each other, priced on something you can forecast. Vendors meter one of four things: the hosts you run, the gigabytes you send, the events you emit, or the engineers who log in.
The first two reward small fleets, the third rewards sampling discipline, and the fourth punishes growth.
Why it matters
The invoice is only the second reason the choice matters. The first is that a startup's outages are found by customers unless something pages an engineer, and the tool a two-person on-call rotation will tune is the one that pays for itself.
The second reason is the cost curve. A per-host platform costs the same whether you have one engineer or twenty, so it is fine on a monolith and brutal on a Kubernetes cluster that autoscales to forty pods. A per-seat platform is the reverse: cheap on launch day, expensive once every hire needs the dashboards.
Choosing the meter that matches how your company will grow is worth more than any feature in a demo.

Pricing
Every figure on this page was read in October 2026 on Grafana Cloud pricing, SigNoz pricing, Better Stack pricing, Sentry pricing, New Relic pricing, Axiom pricing, Honeycomb pricing and Datadog pricing.
Cost scenario, computed from those rates: a five-engineer startup running ten hosts, sending 100 GB of logs and 50 GB of traces a month, with two people on call and all five needing dashboards. Grafana Cloud Pro comes to $62.50: the platform fee, $27.50 for the 50 GB of logs above the included 50, nothing for traces inside the allowance, and $16 for the two visualisation users above the three free ones. Axiom Cloud stays inside its 1 TB loading allowance, so the bill is the $25 fee. SigNoz Teams prices the same volume at $45 of usage ($30 of logs plus $15 of traces), which rounds up to the $49 minimum, or $19 a month under the startup program. New Relic charges $20 for the 50 GB above its free 100 GB plus $109 for two Standard full-platform seats, $129 in total. Better Stack needs the Micro bundle for 160 GB at $150 plus two responders at $29, $208. Datadog bills Infrastructure Pro on all ten hosts, $310 for APM and $10 to ingest the logs, $470 before indexing a single event. Sentry Team and Honeycomb Pro are not on the same meter (errors and events respectively) and are not totalled.
Three takeaways. First, the per-GB vendors (Grafana Cloud, Axiom, SigNoz) land under $65 a month for this team, while the per-host suite is seven times that. Second, seats decide New Relic's bill: three more full-platform engineers add $297 a month on Standard and force Pro at $349 each beyond five. Third, the free tiers are large enough that a pre-seed team should pay nothing: Grafana Cloud's allowances, New Relic's 100 GB and Axiom's 500 GB of loading each cover a product with real users.

The bottom line
Grafana Cloud is the pick for most startups: the free tier carries a seed-stage product, Pro adds a small platform fee plus data, and the stack underneath is open source if you ever want to leave. SigNoz is the better answer for a team that has standardised on OpenTelemetry and wants one low monthly minimum with unlimited members. Better Stack wins when the first question is whether the site is up and who gets paged, and Axiom wins when logs are the whole problem. Add Sentry to any of them. New Relic is the value choice for heavy telemetry with few full seats, Honeycomb for high-cardinality debugging with a whole company querying, and Datadog for a funded team that wants every product on one agent and accepts per-host growth.
